At some point in their lives, most people end up having surgery. Sometimes it is a complex procedure that requires general anesthesia, but many others for much simpler procedures, even with the patient awake. In these cases, we have the feeling that … This is almost always repeated, and it is intense cold which is noticeable as soon as you enter the room. But why does this happen?
The doctor spoke precisely on this subject Miguel Saldana, surgeon who also broadcasts content about his profession on social networks. In one of the latest videos published on his TikTok account, the specialist explains why operating rooms maintain such low temperatures.
Cold for safety
As detailed, there is two fundamental reasons behind this constant cold. The first directly concerns patient safety. A lower temperature helps prevent the proliferation of germs, which is important in an environment where any contamination can have serious consequences.
The second reason is linked to the working conditions of the medical team, particularly the surgeon. During an intervention, we use gowns, gloves, masks and powerful spotlights which quickly generate heat. “A comfortable temperature for the surgeon, who should not sweat,” explains Saldaña.
Indeed, the specialist insists on the fact that sweating presents a real risk in the operating room. “Sweating results extraordinarily dangerous because it could fall into the operating field and is not sterile,” he warns.
