MADRID, December 28 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Taiwan government on Sunday celebrated Israel’s decision on Friday to recognize the independence of the Somali separatist state of Somaliland, which represents the adoption of a position radically contrary to that expressed by the Somali government itself as well as by the European Union, the United States or communities of Arab and African countries allied with the federal authorities in Mogadishu.
The position took the form of a statement from the Taiwanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, collected by the territory’s official agency, the CNA. In the text, the ministry welcomes the fact that Taiwan, Israel and Somaliland are “democratic partners sharing the same values of freedom and the rule of law”.
The fact is that relations between Taiwan and Somaliland are particularly close, especially since five years ago, when Taipei opened a representative office in Somaliland’s capital, Hargeisa, in August 2020; an act issued by the Somaliland authorities a month later.
For its part, the UN Security Council will hold an emergency session next Monday to examine Israel’s decision. It is worth mentioning that in less than a week, on January 1, 2026, Somalia will assume the one-month rotating presidency of this UN body, the highest executive body, responsible for maintaining peace and security in the world.
