The Argentine entertainment world woke up to news mourning Citizen Music: he has died Ricardo “Chiqui” Pereyrarenowned tango singer, 74 years old. The artist was in hospital for several days after suffering serious injuries in a domestic accident.
Pereyra, a native of General Roca, Río Negro, remained hospitalized at a medical center in the city of Buenos Aires with a guarded prognosis after falling from a ladder, requiring emergency surgery. As the hours passed, his clinical condition deteriorated and became irreversible.
The death was confirmed by those around him through an emotional message spread on social networks. “With all the pain in the world, I must inform you of the death of ‘El Chiqui’. The miracle that did not come, the prognosis that was predictable, but still we have not lost faith,” they explained.
In the same statement, the family asked for respect and privacy to get through this difficult moment, particularly mentioning his wife’s situation. “Mom is devastated like the rest of the family, but she, who was the support, is today more fragile than ever. That is why she is unable to receive messages or calls at the moment,” they noted, thanking the countless expressions of affection she has received.
Days ago it was reported that the musician was clinically stable, although without neurological reactions, a condition that ultimately led to death.
“Chiqui” Pereyra was born on June 26, 1951 and left a deep mark on the history of tango. His consecration took place in 1978, after his time in the emblematic program Grandes Valores del Tango, where his talent was immediately recognized by the directors of the cycle.
During his long career he was one of the leading figures of the Botica de Tango and received the prestigious Santos Vega Award in 2007. His death caused a deep shock not only in his hometown of Río Negro, but also on stages at home and abroad, where his voice was an ambassador of the genre and an undisputed reference of civic music.
