The actress Sylvia Prado celebrates 50 years of life and 27 years of career at the Teatro Oficina with the public rehearsal of “O Esplendor da Fera”, her first monologue. The play, a recreation of the work “A Filha da Monga”, by Bahian playwright Luiz Marfuz, constitutes another step in the actress’s career and reflects the exploration and liberation of the female body.
The central character, Luzia, is torn from childhood to replace her mother in the role of “Monga”, a monstrous attraction in a dilapidated amusement park. Exploited and silenced, the young woman rebels, is arrested and tells her story to a forensic psychiatrist. The structure gives Prado a range of emotions to explore: childish innocence, the fury of the caged beast, and the analytical lucidity of the story.
Presentation in the form of open rehearsal is a fundamental practice for Oficina. The public is invited to closely witness the failures, the repetitions and the discoveries, thus becoming complicit in the birth of the work. The production is by Luiz Marfuz in partnership with Marcelo Drummond, artistic director of Oficina.
The celebration of Sylvia Prado’s 50th birthday is the emotional axis of the event. A member of Oficina since the end of the 1990s, she participated in the epic production of “Os Sertões”, coordinated social projects and is today one of the leaders of the post-Zé Celso transition. On stage, she is known for her ability to oscillate between vulnerability and fury.
For the monologue, Prado carried out intense preparation with Ito Alves (body percussion) and Rafa Roman (vocals). “O Esplendor da Fera” is also a reflection of the journey of the artist, whose career is dedicated to marginalized groups.
