Max Verstappen (Red Bull) won the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix this Sunday at the Yas Marina Circuit, United Arab Emirates, but It wasn’t enough for him to take first place in the overall ranking. Because Lando Norris (McLaren) was third, behind his partner Oscar Piastri and won the driver’s title.
The Dutchman started from first place and held it for long stretches of the race. He only gave it up when he pitted and then quickly regained it. Despite his stunning victory, the third in a row and the eighth of the year that made him the top winner (eight wins against seven for Norris and Piastr), It finished the competition with 421 units, just two behind the British. For his part, the Australian had a chance to become champion on the final day, finishing third with 410 points.
McLaren, which won the F1 constructors’ title six days before the end of the calendar, won the drivers’ trophy again after 17 years. The last one had been Lewis Hamilton in 2008.
Franco Colapinto (Alpine) was one of the two drivers who didn’t score any points during the season because he ended the year with a twentieth place in Yas Marina. The Argentine was substituted Jack Doohan -the other driver without units- since the Emilia Romagna GP and drove his car in 18 races.
His best performance was eleventh place at the Dutch GP. However, as the car’s potential was very limited, he was unable to achieve this goal, but he secured continuity for the next year as Alpine confirmed him as one of the two starting drivers along with Pierre Gasly.
