Christmas or vacation, that is the question. At least for the Popular Party of the Community of Madrid, which raises this dilemma every year as part of its cultural war repertoire against the government led by Pedro Sánchez. But not forever. The newspaper archives don’t lie.
The most recent publication dates from December 24, when Sánchez wished “happy holidays” in a video shared through his X profile. Less than two hours later, the PP of Isabel Díaz Ayuso qualified the president. “Merry Christmas (with two emojis: a Christmas tree and a gift). It says MERRY CHRISTMAS (sic). It doesn’t cost that much to say,” they wrote on the same platform, in response to the “socialist”.
This is the same (identical) message that the party used to respond to the PSOE last year. Or last Christmas, as the PP would say. However, despite the insistence of the “popular” in defending the term, many people use the two expressions interchangeably to commend these dates. Even the leaders of his own party.
December 2016. Alfonso Serrano, current secretary general of the PP in the region and right-hand man of Ayuso. “On behalf of the manager and our president, Cristina Cifuentes, thank you very much for your work and happy holidays.” Then-President Cifuentes, a few days later: “I sincerely wish you happy holidays and a great new year. »
Cifuentes has several examples. More than thirty, from 2009 to 2021.
Let’s move forward in time. December 2019, already at the time when Ayuso was head of the Madrid executive. This time, Carlos Díaz-Pache, spokesperson for “popular” in the Regional Assembly. “Happy holidays to all”, “Happy holidays to all, team” or even “Thank you and happy holidays”. Up to three times, on the 12th, 13th and 14th.
Further in time. 2013. Account of what was then called Twitter of the Grupo Popular Madrid, at the town hall. The profile welcomes the Municipal Housing and Land Company of Madrid City Hall to the social network… with “happy holidays”.
December 2017. This time, outside the capital, no more and no less than under the presidency of the Spanish government. Same position as that currently occupied by Sánchez to which the Madrid PP responds. But, on this occasion, with Mariano Rajoy as leader of the Executive. PP, wow. “On these important dates, our soldiers and their families have the affection of all. Their sacrifice and dedication are a source of pride for the Spanish people. Happy Holidays, Ministry of Defense. MR.”
