It is not so difficult to make a journalistic assessment of what happened in education in Argentina this year. Strong or relevant news there were practically none.
However, if you look closely, you’ll see that this could be the news: this Education remains far from the public agenda. The fact is that although there have been no significant announcements from those in power, important things have happened in schools, but these events are not being transferred to the social debate. And that’s why education seems blurry, like eternal non-news.
This does not mean that Argentinians have no interest in the issue. Almost all students are still enrolled in primary school, secondary school is progressing (with many difficulties, but it is progressing) and around two million students are attending university, whose families value this education, which was reflected in the great march across the country in April 2024.
and all thatdespite poor educational results in international tests.
It happens to us that, like a football team that gets used to losing, it seems that bad news no longer has any effect in these tests for us Argentines. We have lost for years and are already resigned.
But the low visibility of the educational topic poses a challenge, above all, to the leadership: the people who are able to do it have a greater privilege to bring issues and concerns into public opinion.
Today, most of them – politicians, entrepreneurs, trade union or social leaders – do not put education at the center of their priorities.. Something that happens in other countries.
It must be said that the journalistic media in Argentina does not privilege education either.
This year the voice of some leaders has been heard, such as the case of Paolo Rocca, president of Techint, who took aim at the authorities in general at an annual event dedicated to education Don’t put the issue of education on the agenda.
He expressed concern about the negative impact that low educational outcomes have for the industry and for the growth of the country.
And he said the big challenge today is “mobilizing public opinion around the importance of education.”
In fact, the big challenge for 2026 is this open your eyes again. Transform the never-ending non-educational news into an aspiration and a collective action aimed at improving the education of Argentines. And that contributes to generation the good news that will enable an Argentina that takes off.
