The Co-General Secretary of the General Confederation of Labor (CGT), Cristian Jeronimoheld a dialogue this Wednesday Future rock in which he commented on the labor reform planned by the Javier Mileis government. During the conversation he explained: “We reject the labor reform because (…) it only proposes an abolition of rights“.
Jerónimo explained: “The CGT board will meet tomorrow at noon and we understand that.” will look for a common position to transfer the Central Obrera’s rejection to labor reform“. He noted that “there is a rejection of the labor reform project, although we still don’t know the rolebut the guidelines”.
Regarding the reasons for the rejection, he explained: “We reject it because we understand that.” It is not a project that integrates new workers into the formal sector. There are many informal workers in Argentina. We must give them the opportunity again to have rights, health and everything that goes with the world of work. This reform merely increases and eliminates both individual and collective rights. and does not raise any higher expectations.
Authoritarians don’t like that
The practice of professional and critical journalism is a mainstay of democracy. That is why it bothers those who believe that they are the owners of the truth.
Labor reform: What items came from the May council?
Jerome assured “What’s not working here, what’s in recession, is the economyThen (the government) looks for an excuse to carry out a completely regressive reform, which we know will not be successful, because if the economy is not working, if the internal market is not working, if there is no consumption, you can make all the reforms you want, which in fact Jobs will continue to be lost and every day they will continue to close businesses.”
The union leader added: “Today there is no expectation or predictability that the productive sector would understand.” Reform will make it more competitive and there will be more production.”
When asked about compensation, he said: “We strongly reject it.”. Compensation is not a reward that the employer gives to the employee, but rather the years of effort of the employees, the productive power of the company. Nobody gives them anything. We don’t agree on anything“.
Labor reform: What will happen to vacation, pay, layoffs and the hour bank according to the latest draft?
Regarding the cessation fund, he warned: “There is not a single activity that has implemented it. The problem in the world of work is not compensation” and stressed that “the problem is that the economy does not work.”
As for the working day, Jerónimo spoke out against the extension from eight to twelve hours: “Everything that is regressive, that no longer gives rights and that takes away rights, we disagree“. He emphasized that “collective agreements exist to modernize certain activities”. There are clear examples in Argentina, like the automobile sector or the oil sectorthe needs of each activity being covered by agreements between the parties.”
Regarding work informality, Jerónimo claimed that the government “is not sending a clear message, since it is supposedly proposed as a reform to integrate the informal sectors into the formal sector.” But let’s first start by stopping the bleeding of industrial murder and the loss of jobs that we have every day.
National poll: 61% support labor reform, but 43% support Milei’s proposal
Regarding vacation, Jerónimo said: “In Argentina, no one takes 30 consecutive days, but this cannot be in the hands of employers, but rather in agreement with the employee.” If tomorrow employers tell an employee how he has to take his vacation, that will be a problem. “It is the worker who must have the flexibility to distribute them as they wish.”
Regarding negotiations between employees and employers, he clarified: “It is always a decision of the employee with the reporting of the trade union organization. We demand collective rights, trade union organizations have the preponderance when it comes to representing the interests of employees. If a differential system must be constructed, it must be an agreement between capital and labornot a partisan or ideological issue.
Jerónimo acknowledged that there was no contact with those responsible for Casa Rosada regarding this project: “We didn’t talk to anyone, not to Santiago Caputo, not to Karina Milei’s people, not to the chief of staff. “We have not received a call, nor has anyone called us in time to discuss this project.”
The importance of labor reform: Only 6 million Argentines work in the private sector
Regarding society’s view of unionism, Jerónimo pointed out: “Us We need to rebuild a trade union center that is very representative in the countryand that covers the needs of the most neglected sectors. “We need to understand that we are not just defending formal workers.”
Regarding the CGT strategy, he said: “We will take all necessary measures.” We will act and we have the means to do so. We will use all the tools at our disposal Stop anything that harms workers“.
Finally, regarding the possibility of violent measures, Jerónimo stated: “If everything had been solved with a strike, we would have carried out all the necessary strikes. But 45% of workers in Argentina are informal. This does not mean that we have the power to take a direct action measure, be it a strike or a mobilization, even in the legislature. Whatever it takes, this CGT will do it. “It is the position that we clearly represent in relation to the world of work and society.”
