The city of São Paulo recorded winds of 82 km/h on Wednesday morning (12/10). The wind gusts occur amid an extratropical cyclone formed in the southern region of Brazil.
According to Civil Defense, the measurement was carried out between 10:00 and 10:30 a.m., in Mirante de Santana, north of São Paulo. In addition, the areas of Congonhas Airport in the south and Campo de Marte in the north recorded winds of 69 km/h.
As of 10:30 a.m., the São Paulo metropolitan region had already received 46 calls for falling trees.
Extratropical cyclone reflections
According to Civil Defense, even far from the territory of São Paulo, the extratropical cyclone is large and intense enough to affect several regions of São Paulo. According to the Climate Emergency Management Center (CGE) of the São Paulo City Hall, despite the strong winds, the capital of São Paulo and the São Paulo metropolitan region are expected to have sunshine between the clouds in the afternoon.
The CGE emphasizes that the average wind speed should reach 30 km/h, with sometimes wind gusts exceeding 70 km/h. In addition, there is a risk of falling trees.
Impacts on SP
According to Civil Defense meteorologist Willian Minhoto, the cyclone, although it formed in the southern region of Brazil, draws air from other parts of the country, channeling currents of warm and humid air from the north and central-west. The condition favors rain, thick cloud formation and thunderstorms.
In addition, Minhoto explained that the cyclone boundary is associated with the passage of a cold front which, as it advances through São Paulo, causes a drop in temperature, an increase in cloudiness and moderate to strong winds. The State suffers significant effects, even far from the heart of the phenomenon.

The eastern part of the state of São Paulo can be hit by winds of more than 90 km/h because it is in the intensified flow zone. The topography, with mountainous areas and irregular relief, also channels the wind and increases gusts.
A crisis office set up by Civil Defense and made up of leaders of energy concessionaires, firefighters, the Roads Department (DER), the SP State Social Fund, Sabesp, Artesp and Arsesp are already working to monitor the cyclone and its possible consequences.
