The Government of São Paulo announced this Saturday (20), in Bertioga, the start of Operation Verão Integrada, which combines public security, health, mobility and civil protection. The São Paulo coast is expected to welcome 16.7 million visitors this summer.
The last Operation Verão, which took place from December 2023 to April 2024, left 56 dead in Baixada Santista, being the second deadliest action in the history of the São Paulo police behind the Carandiru massacre, where 111 men were killed during the invasion of the detention house, on October 2, 1992.
In total, the announced investment for direct reinforcement actions amounts to BRL 55 million.
The pillar of the operation is security. According to the SSP (Secretariat of Public Security), this is the largest mobilization in the history of the State for this period, with 4,075 military police and 436 additional vehicles. The distribution of personnel gives priority to Baixada Santista, which accommodates 2,800 officers, while the north coast benefits from the reinforcement of 861 police officers.
Thirteen municipalities on the south and north coasts are integrated into Muralha Paulista, a surveillance system with 1,700 cameras, equipped with facial recognition and license plate reading.
“So anyone who commits a crime in Guarujá, for example, and goes to another city will be monitored by the police,” said Public Security Secretary Osvaldo Nico Gonçalves. In addition to land patrols, the coast will be monitored by seven drones and three planes.
Specialist police forces were also mobilized, including the Shock, Environmental and Road units. In order to speed up the handling of criminal incidents, the civil police increased the number of vacancies for extraordinary teams and made mobile police stations available.
In addition to investment in personnel, according to the state government, there has been an increase in water distribution and wastewater treatment with 2 billion reais invested this year by Sabesp to improve sanitation for residents and tourists.
We are doing a slightly different summer operation this year. We will strengthen health care by transferring resources to municipalities, in addition to extensive works on roads and coastal passages. Tourists who come here can be sure that they will enjoy the best of our coast,” said Governor Tarcísio de Freitas (Republican).
For swimmers, firefighters have stepped up surveillance on the beaches with 567 temporary lifeguards and 253 newly trained soldiers.
In health, the state government said it transferred BRL53.9 million to coastal municipalities to strengthen services during this time of increased demand in emergency rooms and urgent care units.
The State Civil Defense is strengthening its operations throughout the coast, with 1.3 million reais invested and 5,400 agents on standby.
