The Colombian undermines a ritual – 02/12/2025 – Elio Gaspari

The President of the Senate, Davi Alcolombre, has created a crisis with Planalto without any shred of public interest. And all of this is because Lula chose the Attorney General of the Federation, Jorge Messias, for the vacant seat on the Federal Supreme Court. The Colombian wanted former Senate President Rodrigo Pacheco.

To the facts:

The constitutional right to appoint STF Ministers rests with the President of the Republic and him alone. Preferring columbar, like duck over tocopi, is his choice. Lula’s preference for Christ is a privilege.

He pretended that Alcolombre was upset that he had not been warned. This morning is childish.

(In 1967, when Marshal Castelo Branco telephoned the head of the Military House, General Ernesto Geisel, announcing the selection of Adoto’s deputy Lucio Cardoso for the Special Operations Forces, he listened and was quick and harsh. In another version, he would have hung up the phone. Months earlier, preferring to impeach him rather than shut down Congress, Castillo closed Congress and did not impeach Adoto. Geisel hated the deputy all his life. In any case, the incident occurred and was not known until decades later.)

Just as it is up to the president to appoint the court’s ministers, it is up to the Senate to accept or reject it. Christ needs 41 votes, if he does not get them, be patient. This is the path that the Constitution gives to the disaffected. If Messias does not get the votes, Lula will have the option of crying quietly.

Before going to vote, Christ will have to go through a hearing. By admitting that he did not have the necessary qualifications, Alcolombre and the dissatisfied senators would be able to prove their points by exposing him. Rosa Weber was harshly sentenced and passed the court successfully. His performance on January 8th made history.

It would be impolite to say that Christ had more of a resume and conduct than at least two of his court ministers. (The Colombri kept Andre Mendonça in the rain for months. Today Mendonça is one of the best STF ministers.)

Alcolombre was upset by the criticism (and lies) that surfaced against him in the blogosphere. Labor can recommend good manners to its cyber militiamen, but that’s part of life.

The President of the Senate decided to separate from the Prime Minister, Senator Jack Wagner, a person known for his good morals and elegant shirts. In a simultaneous move, the head of the chamber, Representative Hugo Motta, became angry with the leader of the Labor Party in the chamber. Brazil’s parliament, a two-hundred-year-old institution, has given way to teenage clamor.

Alcombre had a heated disagreement with sectors of the government over oil exploration on the tropical fringe, and so far he has been prevailing courageously. He got into trouble with Jorge Mesías, ruining an established and respected ritual.

The Colombri’s anger prompted him to dismantle and approve the bomb agenda. It’s a big crisis for a simple reason. Arrests of this kind only serve to valorize the work of mediators who present themselves as peacemakers at the entrance, only to pay a heavy price at the exit.
