The book details the aesthetic and technological evolution of paints that transformed helmets into historic motorsport symbols.
The history of Brazilian motorsport records a new and important record with the launch of “As Cores da Velocidade – Painted by Sid”. The book, published by Garoa Livros and sponsored by ArcelorMittal, celebrates more than 50 years of Sid Special Paint, the legendary studio founded by Sid Mosca in 1973. The book brings together in its pages images and behind-the-scenes footage of 48 iconic helmets, offering a deep dive into the visual identity of some of the biggest names on the slopes, such as Ayrton Senna, Emerson Fittipaldi, Nelson Piquet, Rubens. Barrichello and Felipe Massa.
With photographs by Cesar Greco and texts by journalist Celso de Campos Jr., the project goes beyond aesthetics to reveal the stories and personal choices that shaped each creation. Each chapter explores the relationship between the studio and the drivers, highlighting how the painting of a helmet became a symbol of the competitor’s personality in front of the public. According to Alan Mosca, Sid’s son and current partner of the company, the work shares the passion that has guided the studio for decades, showing that every creative decision on the tracks carries a deep and historical reason.
In an official announcement, Greco explained:
“The responsibility was enormous. I tried to extract in the photos all the details, the memory and the reality of each piece so that the reader has the feeling of holding the helmets in their hands.”
In addition to the artistic aspect, the book addresses technological developments and the importance of the helmet as a key element of safety. With forewords by Alan and Stella Mosca, as well as representatives from ArcelorMittal and Stock Car, the book reinforces Sid Special Paint’s leading role as a ‘safe haven’ for drivers in a highly competitive environment. The detailed photographic file was designed so that the reader can feel the texture and colors of the pieces, thus preserving the memory of a studio that closely followed the evolution of sport in Brazil and around the world.
Celso de Campos Jr. said:
“Over the past 50 years, the studio has closely followed the evolution of the categories and the drivers, and I believe its role goes beyond the paints. In such a competitive environment, with so much ego and rivalry, Sid and Alan have always been a refuge, people the drivers knew they could trust.”
The official launch took place last December, coinciding with the Stock Car’s final stop at the Interlagos circuit. Those interested can purchase the book directly from the SID Special Paint website for R$260.00, guaranteeing a collectible that encapsulates the symbolism and emotions surrounding the famous “colors of speed.”
