The Valencian Government, through its spokesperson Miguel Barrachina, avoided this Friday evaluating the dozen WhatsApp that the former president of the Generalitat Carlos Mazón sent on the day of the dana to the leader of the Popular Party, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, in which he succinctly commented on the disaster caused by the dana which devastated half of the province of Valencia and caused 230 deaths. “I am not going to give an opinion on the judicial process, but rather on each of the procedures,” declared the spokesperson for the Consell chaired by Juanfran Pérez Llorca. Barrachina in fact disfigured the PSPV-PSOE – which asked Feijóo to hand over to Judge Catarroja the entire conversation he had with Mazón that day – by wanting to know “all the messages of who had responsibility and who did not” and “where everyone was at each minute”.
“I heard the PSOE make these types of statements and I would ask them for a minimum of consideration,” emphasized the spokesperson for the Valencian government during the press conference that followed the last plenary session of 2025. “The PSOE should question itself because the owner of the channels, who is Pedro Sánchez, was in India that day, its vice-president, Teresa Ribera, in Brussels and the Secretary of State responsible (referring to Hugo Morán) was in Colombia And they want to know the. WhatsApp and each person’s steps, and we don’t even know which continent they were on compared to theirs,” he accused them.
The Consell spokesperson resorted to a standard response when asked about the contradictions between what Mazón wrote to Feijóo that day and what the council has proposed so far. former president of what happened. “I insist that if I have to give my opinion on each of the orders or measures taken by the justice of the Valencian Community, I will end up like the Spanish government: criticizing the Supreme Court for having condemned a politicized state attorney general,” said Barrachina, avoiding the contradictions that arise from the WhatsApp recently known, such as the moment he learned of deaths or the deployment of government resources to the area affected by the flood.
Last Christmas Eve, Alberto Núñez Feijóo handed over to the court, through a notarized document, the messages he had received from former president Mazón along with a background document, but he didn’t send his own, saying the judge didn’t ask for them. The instructor of the Dana case summoned the president of the PP as a witness on January 9 – the politician asked to do it electronically – precisely because of these messages with Mazón.
The communications begin, according to the notarial deed given by the PP to the judge, at 8:08 p.m. with a brief “Thank you Presi” from Mazón in response to a message of support from Feijóo at the time president at 7:59 p.m. Only three minutes later, the first ES alert was sent to the population. This means that Mazón responded to the leader of the PP when the dana had already been wreaking havoc in the province of Valencia for hours and had caused the majority of victims and, therefore, refuted Feijóo himself, who had declared that he had been informed punctually by Mazón, “in real time” since the day before, that is, since Monday. Although he later clarified that he had made a mistake because he was referring to Tuesday and not Monday.
The notarial deed includes a dozen messages from Mazón between 8:08 p.m. and 8:08 p.m. and 11:29 p.m., and a phone call from Mazón, to which Feijóo could not answer because he was at an institutional event, to ask for the telephone number of the former president of Telefónica, José María Álvarez-Pallete, to which the leader of the PP responded with the contact but apologizing for not being able to answer him. At another point, Mazón wrote to him: “We are overwhelmed, we don’t know what is really happening but we are receiving dozens of missing people and I cannot confirm them. »
The national leader of the PP also asked him to what extent the Spanish government was involved in the management of the tragedy. Mazón first told him, at 11:21 p.m., that “more or less” the Central Executive had made itself available to the Valencian, but with a “crisis cabinet that is worthless”. “Well,” he summed up. Later he told her that he had spoken with the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, with Vice President María Jesús Montero, as well as with the Minister of Defense, Margarita Robles and the Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska.
“The problem now is that we cannot even enter many cities with people on the roofs who are scared to death,” he emphasizes, then he points out to the president of his party that at the time, through the Government Delegation, they had what they needed, namely the Military Emergency Unit (UME). A gesture that contrasts with the subsequent complaint by Mazón and much of his government that the government had not deployed enough resources to deal with the emergency.
In this sense, the Ministry of Defense published a statement this Friday in which it asks the president of the PP and Mazón himself “a public apology for not having been truthful” because the messages exchanged “demonstrate that the UME was available, from the first minute, as recognized by the former president in your WhatsApp messages.
Later, Mazón adds in another of his messages to Feijóo that “deaths are already appearing in Utiel” but they have not made it public and that “others will appear”, despite the fact that during his appearance at the Congress of Deputies on November 17, he assured that he was not aware of any deaths until dawn. “This is going to be a fucking disaster, President,” he told him. The last communication between the two that day was at 11:29 p.m.
Resignation of the national president of the PP
Government spokesperson Elma Saiz called in the morning for Feijóo’s resignation, assuring that he has been sleeping with the dana for a year and that his only objective is to “harm” the Executive, “by first taking on the pain of the victims” of this catastrophe. In an interview with TVE, the new Government spokesperson spoke of the messages that the former president of the Generalitat Valenciana exchanged with Feijóo on the day of the dana.
Saiz considers that the victims of the dana must feel pain because of these messages, sent by Feijóo himself to the Court of Instruction number 3 of Catarroja which is investigating the events, and wonders if the leader of the PP has not yet revealed what he wrote to Mazón “because they have the same tone”.
The Compromís deputy in Congress, Alberto Ibáñez, requested this Thursday the “urgent appearance” of the leader of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, before the Dana Commission of Inquiry of the Lower House, after sending to the court the messages he received from the former Valencian president Carlos Mazón on the night of October 29, 2024. In this context, Ibáñez requested the resignation of the leader of the opposition. “Feijóo must listen to Feijóo and resign as a liar. Mazón never informed him in real time, he said it to appear powerful and to cover up the disastrous management of his territorial man”, he censored.
