The Constitution is an essential pillar of our democracy

Like every December 6th, Toledo and the rest of Spain We celebrate what unites us. 47 years ago, we Spaniards, after a collective decision, created a framework for coexistence that is deeply rooted in consensus, freedom and dialogue.

The Spanish Constitution inaugurated the most stable and fruitful democratic period in our modern historyToday, it must remain the primary reference for understanding and defending who we are as a country. Moreover, it is the indissoluble guarantee of the unity of the Spanish nation, the common and indivisible homeland of all Spaniards.

Spain, thanks to the Constitution, is a social and democratic state of law, and we must remember that sovereignty lies with the Spanish people. This cannot be an empty phrase, but it is the guarantee of it We are all owners of our common futureWhat Spain is, or should be, is decided by all Spaniards.

The Constitution transformed Spain into a state of free and equal citizens before the law. Articles 1 and 2 express this clearly. On the one hand, they specify that Spain is a social and democratic state of law and that national sovereignty resides in the Spanish people, from whom the powers of the state emanate; On the other hand the foundation of the Spanish nation is established and confirmed Its indissoluble unity as a common and indivisible homelandThe recognition and guarantee of the right to self-government of the nationalities and regions that compose them, together with the solidarity between them all, lays the foundations of the autonomous state of Spain.

Toledo, ancient and pluralistic, a bridge of culture and ideas, is the living symbol of that coexistence that represents the values of our Constitution. Therefore, in the political context in which we find ourselves today, which is far from the spirit of the transitional period, To talk about the Constitution from Toledo means to talk about freedom, respect, pluralism and unity.

In this context, we must also defend one of the most valuable elements of our constitutional system, which is the division of powers, and that the executive, legislative and judicial powers act as an independent counterweight to prevent abuses and ensure institutional neutrality, which makes the phrase of Locke and Montesquieu effective; Authority must serve that “Power stops power.”

Talking about the Constitution from Toledo means talking about freedom, respect, pluralism and unity.”

Carlos Velasquez Romo

Mayor of Toledo

Today from Toledo I want to remember that The Constitution is not a memory of the pastIt is our duty to preserve it, defend it and strengthen it with the will of dialogue.

It is the best legacy we can leave for future generations. The solid democracy, coexistence based on mutual respect, and the common future that unites us is stronger than what divides us.
