The General Directorate of Traffic begins tomorrow, Friday, at 3 p.m., a major regulation, surveillance and security operation which will last until midnight on Tuesday January 6, 2026.
This deployment responds to the increase in … mobility which is expected during the Christmas holidays, for which the agency predicts a total of 22.4 million trips on the Spanish road network.
The scheme will be structured in three different phases which coincide with the main festivities, starting with the first Christmas phase from Friday December 19 to Thursday December 25, during which 8.5 million trips are expected.
The second phase will focus on the end of the year, from Friday December 26 to Thursday January 1, while the third stage, dedicated to the Three Kings Day, will take place from Friday January 2 to Tuesday January 6.
Many of these trips, whether long or short, will be directed particularly during weekends and holidays to second homes, mountain areas for winter sports, winter tourist attraction enclaves and large shopping centers.
To cover this flow of vehicles, the DGT has prepared an operation that has the maximum availability of its human resources, including agents of the Traffic Group of the Civil Guard, staff of the Traffic Management Centers, helicopter patrols and maintenance teams.
Trips planned by the DGT
This staff will work to guarantee mobility and fluidity, installing reversible and additional lanes in the most conflict areas during rush hours, in addition to establishing alternative routes to alleviate traffic.
As part of the security measuresthe agency ordered the cessation of road works and restricted the holding of sporting or road-occupying events, also limiting the movement of freight trucks on specific sections and dates. Likewise, the device is designed to maintain safety conditions in areas affected by bad weather, such as snow, ice or fog, and to assist users in the event of an incident.
Monitoring of driving behavior will be reinforced by the use of fixed and mobile radars, as well as helicopters, drones, cameras and camouflaged vans dedicated to monitoring the use of mobile phones and seat belts.
