The director Carl Erik Rinschknown as 47 Ronin, was convicted of fraud, money laundering and illegal monetary transactions after embezzling funds from a Netflix series for personal expenses. The sentence was pronounced last Thursday (12/11). Rinsch has been in prison since March.
In a statement to the New York Times, the defense criticized the decision: “I believe the verdict was a mistake and I fear that it could set a dangerous precedent for artists who become involved in contractual and creative disputes with their benefactors, in this case one of the largest media companies in the world, and end up being indicted by the federal government for fraud.” »

Between 2018 and 2020, Rinsch received funding from Netflix to develop the series Conquest, which would star Keanu Reeves and feature Bruna Marquezine in the cast. According to the prosecution, the director transferred the amounts to a personal account and used the money for purposes unrelated to production.

The series was officially canceled by Netflix in 2021. By the time the platform announced the decision, Rinsch had reportedly already spent much of the investment on five-star hotels, luxury cars, and real estate. In total, the company spent around 11 million US dollars (59.6 million reais) on the production of the episodes and calculates a total loss of around 55 million US dollars (298 million reais).
In the plot of Conquest, a brilliant scientist creates an artificial intelligence almost indistinguishable from humans and sends it to intervene in conflict zones around the world, believing that his creation will never be discovered. The plan fails, however, and ends up triggering a global conflict.
