- Expected announcement: The White House told Lula it would lift sanctions against Alexandre de Moraes
“The right only lost with this story and Lula got away with it,” a senator told the chronicle team.
The parliamentarian recalls that Bolsonaro was not only sentenced by the first panel of the STF to 27 years and three months in prison in the coup d’état case, but that he also lost his house arrest – and saw his son Eduardo put in the dock for having formulated sanctions against the Brazilian authorities on American soil and whose mandate is still threatened with revocation.

“It’s a hard blow for Eduardo, who is very arrogant. The illusion that he was ‘the guy’ in relations with the American government has been destroyed,” comments an interlocutor close to Bolsonaro, who thought for months that this strategy would be a “shot in the foot”.
Meanwhile, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva managed, in part, to regain the popularity of his government, negotiated the removal of customs duties on Brazilian products and won on a platter a cause to defend in the re-election campaign: the defense of national sovereignty, against the Bolsonarista camp, which even brought a giant flag of the United States to a demonstration on Avenida Paulista on September 7.

Unsurprisingly, Lula started calling Eduardo from “my number 10 shirt”ironic with the fact that Trump’s sanctions helped him regain the government’s popularity in opinion polls. Meanwhile, behind the scenes in Brasilia, the former president’s son, Zero 03, gained fame as the PT member’s “electoral activist.”
“It was a bad decision by Eduardo. He came out with the ball and everything up to the baseline. It was 7-1,” another senator from the Bolsonarista camp said on the blog, also resorting to footballing comparisons.
Behind the scenes, members of the US government say that maintaining sanctions against Moraes and his wife was “incompatible” with US foreign policy interests.

The White House also considered the approval of PL Dosimetry, which could reduce Bolsonaro’s period of imprisonment, accelerating his migration to the semi-open regime, as a “step in the right direction.”
According to MP Paulinho da Força (Solidariedade-SP), rapporteur of the project in the Chamber, Bolsonaro would only spend a total of around two years and four months in prison – today, a detention period of around six years and nine months is expected.

In August this year, Moraes placed Bolsonaro under house arrest. This preventive measure was replaced two months later by an arrest in a PF surveillance room in Brasilia, after the former president damaged his electronic ankle bracelet.
As the blog reported, after the conversation between Lula and Donald Trump last week, Bolsonaro’s allies and the president’s aides at the Planalto Palace were warned that they could expect a new measure of detente between Washington and Brasilia.

The Bolsonaristas themselves were already preparing for what they considered “the worst-case scenario” and were privately discussing how to implement a new political discourse.
The repetition of the new narrative was revealed this Friday by Eduardo himself, who spoke out on X after the White House lambasted his strategy of pressure on the STF.

“We are grateful for the support President Trump has shown throughout this trip and for the attention he has devoted to the serious crisis of freedoms affecting Brazil,” said the congressman.
“We regret that Brazilian society, given the window of opportunity it had, was not able to build the political unity necessary to face its own structural problems. The lack of internal cohesion and insufficient support for initiatives carried out abroad have contributed to the worsening of the current situation.”
