The army of Israel received its first high-power laser system this Sunday from the Ministry of Defense and the Rafael company. the “iron beam”what is used to intercept missiles and drones and will act in addition to this “Iron Dome”thereby reducing costs.
In a statement, the Defense Department reported that the system had proven its effectiveness “in an extensive series of tests against various threats” and successfully intercepted rockets, mortars and unmanned aerial vehicles.
The “Iron Beam” is planned to be integrated into the Israeli Air Force and integrated into Israel’s multi-layered air defense complex as a complement to the “Iron Dome”, “David’s Sling” and “Arrow” systems.
According to the defense, it has “an advanced laser source and a unique electro-optical targeting system, This enables the interception of a wide range of targets with improved range, with maximum precision and superior efficiency at negligible marginal costs, which is the main advantage of the laser system.”
This technological innovation is designed to supplement and reduce costs of the existing air defense systemsince each rocket in the Iron Dome system costs tens of thousands of dollars to launch.
After a complex development process, DDR&D of the Israeli Ministry of Defense and Rafael Advanced Defense Systems today handed over the first Iron Beam laser system to the IDF during an official ceremony at Rafael headquarters in northern Israel.

The Defense Minister, Israel Katzdeclared during the handover ceremony, which took place at Rafael’s headquarters in Israel, that it was a “historic milestone” and warned the “enemies” of his country –mentioning Iran, Syria and Lebanon – that they should not challenge him or “Will face serious consequences.”
“For the first time in the world, a high-performance laser interception system has reached full operational maturity and successfully completed multiple intercepts,” Katz said, according to the release.
Last May, Katz confirmed that it had used laser technology to intercept missiles and drones for the first time in its military offensive against Hezbollah on the border with Lebanon.
