Summary
The WSL quarter-finals at Praia do Futuro defined the men’s semi-finals with exciting clashes; Cauã Costa, Alonso Correa, Israel Junior and Michel Roque have advanced and are competing for places in the final this Sunday.
The quarter-finals of the men’s tournament, held at the World Surf League (WSL) stadium in Praia do Futuro, Fortaleza (CE), gave a taste of what fans can expect for the big decision of the tournament, this Sunday 14.
The clashes started in a tight way in the first round of the men’s tournament: Cauã Costa, ambassador of the Pico Ceará stage, had to look for a comeback and one of the biggest totals of the tournament to qualify against Luan Ferreyra from Pernambuco.
The battery’s decision was announced on the sands of the Ceará coast. Despite aiming for the best score of the competition, 8.67, Ferreyra failed to achieve the amount needed to beat the two-time South American WSL Junior champion.
At EarthCauã once again praised Praia do Futuro, a summit he considers one of his “schools”, and put himself in the fight for the stage title.
Then it was the turn of Peruvian Alonso Correa to fight against Samuel Joca for a place in the semi-finals. The only foreigner still alive in the competition found himself behind his rival in the heats score, but he won the ranking with a series of waves and a backside rotation that wowed the judges.
In the third round, Israel Junior thrilled the crowd in an electrifying heat against WSL Qualifying Series (QS) South American ranking leader Weslley Dantas. Very consistent, the native of Rio Grande do Norte did not leave any space to Dantas and reached the highest total on Sunday, with 13.30, beating Dantas for the place in the semi-final.
During the last round, Michel Roque managed to perform a good sequence and achieved the best overall score of the event, 14.26, to beat Ryan Kainalo and secure his place in the semi-final.
Finally, the penultimate phase of the men’s tournament will be played in the rounds between Cauã Costa against Alonso Correa and Israel Junior against Michel Roque.
The men will face each other again this Sunday, after the definition of the women’s semi-final, in Praia do Futuro. THE Earth broadcasts all series live.
