Currently, Rio Grande do Sul’s rail network has declined by approximately 75% since 1997, when its operation was handed over to the private sector.
The federal deputy Paulo Pimenta (PT) requested, at the beginning of this month, information from Ministry of Transport and to National Land Transport Agency (ANTT) on the removal of tracks and other railway elements from Rio Grande do Sul by the concessionaire Direction. Furthermore, the parliamentarian sent a complaint to the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office (MPF)seeking to investigate possible irregularities in the company’s actions.

THE MPFthrough the Recommendation No. 03/2025had already decided the immediate suspension of the removal of the components, which were mainly sent to Santa Catarina. The prosecutor Osmar Veronese classified the matter as “network cannibalization.”
