The Minister of the Presidency, Justice and Relations with the Courts, Félix Bolaños, has committed himself in the Senate to comply with one of the long-standing demands of the Republican Party of Catalonia: to restore the competences of their juezas and juezas de Paz so that they can celebrate marriages, a function that they have “historically” performed in many municipalities in the community.
The announcement, made as the Minister appeared in the Senate to introduce the Criminal Sentencing Bill, came in the same week that the President made several symbolic and practical gestures to try to bring new people together with a majority in office following the separation announced in November. First, with the survey of the failures of the executive, and then, with a set of measures on the table that Pedro Sánchez now wants to accelerate, as the law to tighten the multiple redundancy of this youth was approved in Congress between the PP, PSOE and Junts with the blessing of the PNV, UPN and Vox. A movement that has recently emerged in the Council for Reform and Reform, the electoral rival of Carles Puigdemont’s party, which has given rise to the idea that many members of the executive are in rebellion and are also demanding compliance with it.
“The ERC has the government’s commitment that we will integrate as soon as possible the competencies of granting and contracting marriages of Peace Juices,” Bolaños affirmed in response to Senator Joan Queralt, who called for the restoration of these competencies. His Justice announced that this will happen “as soon as possible” through “some laws currently in implementation.”
“The Court of Peace, as a historical institution of the country, has for more than 150 years been a reference for proximity justice, resolving disputes in the past, facilitating civil reconciliation and administering key civil registry procedures, including civil marriage, with high symbolic and societal value,” parliamentary sources tell ERC.
