The last contingent of Guzman el Bueno Brigade began his return to Cordoba after completing his deployment to Latvia, where he participated for six months in an international NATO mission focused on strengthening Europe’s eastern flank. The arrival of the military marks the definitive end of this brigade’s participation in the so-called Latvian-Eastern Flank Rotation XVII.
The personnel returned to the national territory via Seville airport, the usual entry point for this type of mission, where they were received by their family, colleagues and military commanders. This return completes the withdrawal of the last Spanish troops remaining on the Adazi base, one of the strategic enclaves of the Atlantic Alliance in the Baltic.
A mission integrated into collective defense
Deployment in Latvia is part of the operation Improved forward presence (eFP) of NATO, intended to strengthen deterrence and defense in the countries on the eastern flank of the Alliance. Spain has been continuously participating in this mission for years, providing highly specialized land units.
During this period, the Spanish Army operated according to the principle of collective defense, one of the fundamental pillars of NATO, which establishes the mutual commitment between allied countries to respond jointly to any threat. This strategic framework is of particular importance in the current security scenario in Eastern Europe.
More than 600 soldiers under Spanish command
The deployed group is made up of more than 600 soldiers, most of them belonging to Brigade X, based in Cordoba. The contingent was led by Lieutenant Colonel Daniel Díaz, head of the Malaga Combat Tank Infantry Battalion, one of the key units of the brigade structure.
Alongside the base unit, soldiers from different army regiments and battalions participated, resulting in the formation of a multi-level force capable of operating in complex scenarios and coordinated with allied armies.
A deployment with broad support from the Army
In addition to the main units, the contingent benefited from the support of more than thirty specialized army units. These contributions were fundamental to guaranteeing specific capabilities in areas such as logistics, communications, engineering or artillery.
Technical and specialized capabilities
Participating units include the 63rd Field Rocket Artillery Regiment, the 31st Electronic Warfare Regiment, the 11th Engineer Specialties Regiment and the 21st Signal Regiment. They are joined by the 21st Logistics Support Group and the 1st Transport Group, essential to the operational support of the deployment.
This structure allowed the Spanish force to fully integrate into multinational exercises with troops from other allied countries, thus improving interoperability and joint response capacity in different tactical scenarios.
Multinational training in the Baltic
During their stay in Latvia, the soldiers of the Guzmán el Bueno Brigade participated in numerous combined exercises with the forces of allied countries. These maneuvers aimed to strengthen coordination, speed of deployment and operational efficiency in a multinational environment.
Continuing training has allowed Spanish units to maintain a high level of readiness, adapting to the climatic and geographical conditions of the Baltic and NATO operational standards.
A year of intense activity for the Cordoba brigade
With the return of this last rotation, the Guzmán el Bueno X Brigade closes a year marked by strong operational activity. Participation in the Latvia XVII mission on the eastern flank strengthened the role of the Army of Cordoba within the Spanish Army and in the international context.
The final assessment clearly shows Spain’s commitment to shared security in Europe and highlights the high degree of preparation, professionalism and interoperability achieved by the deployed units. The return to Cordoba ends a demanding mission that has placed the brigade at the center of one of NATO’s most relevant strategic operations today.
