Cariocas and tourists are experiencing another day of intense heat this Sunday (28). The city of Rio de Janeiro has been on the third level of the thermal protocol of the City Hall operational center since Christmas Eve. Heat 3 is activated when a temperature is recorded between 36°C and 40°C and is expected to remain or increase for at least three consecutive days.
According to Alerta Rio, the maximum was 36.7°C, at 1 p.m., in Vila Militar (west zone), and the minimum was 22.1°C, at 4 a.m., at Jacarepaguá station (also in the west zone). Throughout the day the weather remained stable, with clear skies and no rain recorded.
Due to the high temperatures, since the 24th the municipality has registered bathers early in the morning on the beaches of the southern zone and at dawn in the area. Mayor Eduardo Paes (PSD) asked for cooperation from regulars, because municipal cleaners cannot move freely on the sand.
The government of Rio de Janeiro has launched an action with hydration points for bathers. According to the government, 10 thousand liters of drinking water have been made available at the aid stations of Leme, Copacabana, Arpoador, Ipanema and Parque Madureira.
The action was also organized in the Central do Brasil, Bangu, Campo Grande and Madureira stations. The 27 state ADUs will also serve as hydration points.
In February, the city reached level 4 of the heat protocol, when it recorded the highest temperature ever identified by Rio’s alert system, 44°C on February 17.
