Last weekend the Valencia Marathon took place, in which the businessman and president of Mercadona, Juan Roig, offers one million euros to the athlete who manages to break the world record for the event in the capital of Turia. The prize will have to wait, but Roig, sponsor of the competition, wishes increase participation in the marathon.
“We have a demand of 60,000 people if we wanted it next year. And that won’t be possible. The city and the organization give what they give. I push them and tell them they need to do more and they don’t. For me very easy. The most difficult thing is for Paco Borao,” Roig said, referring to the organizer of the test and president of SD Correcaminos.
“We are very satisfied and very happy with what has been achieved. I believe that we have achieved a very sustainable marathon, sustainable in all its aspects, of course economical. It is already a test that is sufficient in itself and for us it is a great objective achieved”, continues Roig in statements collected by World of runners.
Roig also apologizes to the citizens of Valencia for the inconvenience caused: “We must apologize to the citizens because It’s impossible to make an omelette without breaking eggs. “And some of them are inconvenienced by the traffic and I apologize for that, but I think it’s very good for the common good of the whole city.”
The Valencian businessman maintains his idea of giving a bonus of one million to the record holder, even if he does not plan to increase the price: “First, when we achieve it, then we can increase itbut for now they are just words. When the fact is established, we can ask this question. Now it is maintained and is very suitable for both men and women. »
He also expressed his satisfaction with the sustainability of the test: “The organization itself generates the enough money thanks to sponsorsregistration and a lot of things that have been done to make it sustainable, that’s what we have to do in all the things that we organize in Spain, that things have to be sustainable, not eligible for subsidies.
“We We do not receive any grants from any entity. Well, the city leaves us free all the infrastructure that already does enough to do it, but is sustainable in itself,” concludes Roig.
