The death of municipal inspector Márcio José Gomes, shot dead by a military police officer during an approach in Rio Claro, in the interior of São Paulo, highlighted a criminal past recorded in court records. Before the alleged confrontation that ended in his death, Márcio had been formally charged for participation in a planned robbery against the residence of a municipal councilor in December 2019.
According to court documents obtained by Metropolisesthe municipal inspection agent was identified as a member of a criminal association that had planned and provided logistical support for a robbery at the home of councilor André Luís de Godoy, at the time president of Rio Claro City Hall. The group, according to the investigation, acted in an articulate manner and with a well-defined division of tasks.

Organized flight
The criminal action had the appearance of an official act. Five men, still unidentified, arrived at the victim’s home posing as federal police officers. They wore clothing similar to that of the PF, were heavily armed and used a utility vehicle with stickers to simulate an official vehicle. The strategy, the details of the process, were aimed at intimidating and neutralizing any resistance.
The building’s doorman was forced to allow entry under threat of arrest. In the apartment, the victims were captured, handcuffed and falsely accused of corruption. While keeping the advisor, his companion and the doorman under surveillance, the criminals searched the property and took R$5,650 in banknotes, cell phones and jewelry. Before fleeing, they also asked the victims to wait for the press to arrive, thus reinforcing the farce of a police operation.
The role of the municipal inspector
The investigation attributed a central role behind the scenes to Márcio José Gomes. As a civil servant and acquaintance of the victim, he would have provided information on the address and routine of the advisor, considered decisive for the success of the action. In addition, he was designated as responsible for providing material support to the perpetrators of the theft, such as mattresses and preparing the place that served as a base for the group.
This location was a farm in the Santa Clara II neighborhood, provided by another defendant, Bruno de Moraes. There, according to the process, the vehicle used in the crime was hidden, its license plate was falsified and given stickers that made it appear to be part of the police fleet. After the crime, traces found on the farm – mattresses, adhesive materials and personal items – strengthened the link between the accused and the theft.

Charge and arrest
Márcio and Bruno were charged with crimes such as criminal conspiracy, receiving, altering vehicle identification signs and robbery. The court ordered temporary detention and, later, preventive detention, emphasizing the concrete seriousness of the behavior, the prior planning and the use of violence and serious threats against the victims.
During the investigation, Márcio was found with a sum of money whose origin was not specified. The telephone investigation revealed exchanges of messages related to the preparation of the crime, the preparation of the scene and the logistics of the group.
Years later, Márcio’s name returns to the media scene in different and definitive circumstances. He died during an alleged clash with police in Rio Claro, an episode that also resulted in the seizure of weapons and suspicions of links to organized crime.
