Part of the turbulent trajectory of Nick Reiner – convicted this week for the deaths of his parents, filmmaker Rob Reiner and photographer Michele Singer – is depicted in the film “Being Charlie” (2015). The production (which will be available on the Plex Player platform from January 1) has attracted attention again following the tragic news, which prompted an intense investigation by the Robbery and Homicide Division of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), in the United States.

The biographical drama is inspired by the story of Nick Reiner (who, in fiction, is called Charlie and is played by actor Nick Robinson, coincidentally with the same name as the real-life character) during his youth, a time when the boy was dealing with drug addiction.

With a screenplay written by Nick Reiner himself – in partnership with Matt Elisofon, a friend he met while admitted to a rehabilitation clinic – “Being Charlie” follows the footsteps of an 18-year-old young man struggling with drug addiction and recurring conflicts with his family. The son of a film star who decides to enter politics, he undergoes compulsory hospitalizations, stays in shelters and successive relapses, in full quest for autonomy and acceptance.
“Having to deal with these things made me who I am today. I met some incredible people while I was homeless, totally out of my comfort zone. Now I’m home for a long time, readjusted to life in Los Angeles and living with my family. But there were many dark years,” said Nick Reiner, at the time of the film’s release, in an interview with “People.”

Authorities say Rob and Michele Reiner were found dead in their home in the Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles after one of the couple’s daughters located the bodies and called police. City firefighters were the first to arrive on scene and requested backup, and shortly afterward, the LAPD Homicide Division took control of the investigation.
Nick Reiner was arrested the same day his parents’ deaths were discovered. The authorities stressed that he showed no attempt to escape or resistance. Last Wednesday (17), Los Angeles District Attorney Nathan Hochman confirmed that Nick was facing aggravated homicide charges for the murder of his parents, which could result in a life sentence without the possibility of parole or even the death penalty.
