A New York judge yielded this judgment to the defense of the historic leader of the Sinaloa cartel Ismael El Mayo Zambada, that the former Martes requested a 90-day extension to be able to obtain enough information to reduce the sentence. The document broadcast on the networks indicates that the judgment, which the judge had postponed to June 12, was postponed to April 13. El Mayo pleaded guilty in August to two counts of drug trafficking and criminal enterprise, which continues in a New York court, a move that allowed him to avoid the death penalty and face a public trial.
The document relies on American regulations to specify that Mayo’s defense “must submit a sentencing memorandum and any objections to the PSR (inform before sentencing) before March 30, 2026.” reads the writing, signed by Judge Brian M. Cogan, of the Eastern District of New York. His defender Frank Pérez requested recourse to the magistrate to be able to investigate the evidence. and people who provided more information about the case. Pérez then explained that several people could only confirm his availability.
Zambada had never set foot in a prison during his criminal probation. Until the end of July 2024, when Joaquín Guzmán López, the son of his partner Joaquín El Chapo Guzmán, sequestered him in Culiacán, Sinaloa, to hand him over to the American authorities. It is a move that Guzmán López himself, 39, admitted to a court in the Northern District of Illinois last December 1 and which also implied his surrender before Washington. After setting a trap at a house in town, several men arrived in Mayo and got into a truck that headed to a nearby airstrip. There he boarded a plane, from where he was given a drink laced with sedatives. Authorities arrested the two criminals in El Paso, Texas.
But this is not Guzmán López’s only revelation to Washington. The capo declared himself guilty that day to drug trafficking and organized crime charges for his participation in the Sinaloa cartel. It was the second of the Guzmán clan to give in to the United States. On July 11, his little brother Ovidio, El Ratón, also pleaded guilty to drug trafficking. The United States Government celebrated the statements of Guzmán López, but recognized that his brothers Iván Archivaldo, Jesús Alfredo, for having offered 10 million dollars, remained fugitives. And extends the siege: “Dos Cayeron, disappeared”.
The delivery of the Mayo by Chapo’s wife quickly sparked a wave of violence in Sinaloa, which culminated in open war between two factions of the historic cartel, the Mayos and the Chapitos. Culiacán, capital of the Mexican state, became the bloody scene of this battle. The internal conflict has also led the historic cartel to deflate its criminal forces in the country, a situation endorsed by the Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG), which continues to export violence throughout the country.
