MADRID, December 21 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The latest episode of the border conflict between Thailand and Cambodia, which began two weeks ago, has already left 53 civilians dead (34 on the Thai side, 19 on the Cambodian side), as reported by the respective authorities of the two countries amid a series of bombings and cross-border raids, with no end in sight for the moment.
In its latest report published this Sunday, the Thai Ministry of Health confirmed that 34 civilians died between December 7 and this Sunday. Among them, 33 died following the impacts of Cambodian projectiles and one died “in a direct attack”, reported the ministry in its report collected by Thai media.
The Thai army, it should be remembered, is aware of 19 other soldiers killed in these hostilities.
On the Cambodian side, army spokesperson General Maly Socheata reported this Sunday during a press conference that at present, there have been 19 civilians killed, including a child, and 79 others injured since the new outbreak of fighting until the afternoon of last Saturday. The army did not provide information on the number of casualties among its troops.
Regarding displaced people, the Thai Ministry of Health estimates that there are 213,000 evacuees currently sheltering in 889 shelters in the area. Cambodia, for its part, estimates the number of displaced people at nearly 520,000, including some 165,000 children.
Although neither side has reported diplomatic approaches in recent hours, American mediation, through US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, has expressed confidence in the possible signing of a ceasefire “Monday or Tuesday” next week.
