The mayor of Alcanar (Tarragona), Joan Roig, announced his resignation and attributed it in part to the stress of managing up to five drops of cold in recent years, in a municipality particularly affected by flooding due to its urban planning. In a public letter, he assures that he “already felt the demands of the road” when he became mayor, but that he “could not imagine” that he would face five danas.
“The torrential rains, sustained over time, have generated an enormous workload and responsibilities beyond the limits of the town hall. The permanent management of the emergency has left a physical and mental imprint that today I can no longer continue to assume,” he expressed.
Roig (ERC), who holds two degrees in physiotherapy and social sciences, explained that he was also appointed as an interim secondary school teacher in an institute in the Barcelona region, for which he also cited this professional change as a reason and regretted that it did not allow him to dedicate to Alcanar the time and availability that the municipality deserves.
“The function of mayor must be exercised with all its abilities and dedication. When this is not possible, we must step down. This is why I inform you of the decision to leave the post of mayor in order to facilitate his replacement,” he adds.
“The time for decision-making is coming. Alcanar needs people who lead the institution with all the lucidity and the ability to achieve the objectives. In this sense, I leave serene and confident that the government team has the experience and commitment necessary to face this stage of transformation”, continues the mayor, who considered it an “extraordinary gift” to have been able to lead the Town Hall.
