Córdoba, December 12 (EFE). – The mayor of Belalcázar, Francisco Luis Fernández Rodríguez, has informed the provincial leadership of the PSOE of Córdoba of his decision to resign from all his positions after information emerged about an alleged case of sexual harassment.
The PSOE reported this Friday on the decision of the Belalcazeño City Council due to “the allegations of harassment of a municipal worker that emerged in the press”.
Information presented by ABC includes the existence of some sexual messages from the city councilor with a municipal employee in 2023.
Fernández has assured EFE that they are private messages from 2023 with a person who was not a city employee, although he does not rule out that she was linked to a program: “Many people have passed through the city council,” he noted.
He has also stated that his commitment “has always been to the Socialist Party.” “I tried to defend women as best as I could,” he emphasized.
In a statement released this afternoon, Fernández says he “wants to make it clear that my words and attitudes were at no time of a harassing nature; I recognize that these conversations were inappropriate and do not reflect the behavior that I must demonstrate as mayor at all times. I deeply regret having made this error of judgment.”
He believes it is important to make it clear that “the conversations were not directed at any City Council employee, but that it was an inappropriate conversation, a lack of respect, to which I did not at the time give the importance that it should have had.”
Therefore, “it pains me to see that my actions may have caused confusion or discomfort, and I take full responsibility for them.”
He also apologizes to local residents and to the people “who were offended by this situation.”
The previous councilor justifies: “With this step backwards, I want to allow the municipality of Belalcázar to continue with renewed leadership and with the certainty that my mistake will not affect the work of those who will continue to lead the city council.”
Francisco Luis Fernández had been mayor of Belalcázar, a town of 3,000 people in the Los Pedroches region, since 2015. EFE
