Buenos Aires, December 13 (EFE).- Argentine President Javier Milei and several members of his government celebrated this Saturday the inauguration of the 2025 Clausura tournament of Estudiantes de La Plata, a club to which they have pledged their support in recent weeks due to the confrontation of its president Juan Sebastián Verón with the Argentine Football Association (AFA).
Milei, who has posted messages in support of the club in recent weeks and even showed off a T-shirt in his office, celebrated “Pincha’s” victory on the social network
Several others were added to the presidential message, including one from Daniel Scioli, Minister of Tourism and Environment of the Government, who also celebrated the triumph of Estudiantes en
Another who celebrated the inauguration of the La Plata Club was Chancellor Pablo Quirno, who wrote
Patricia Bullrich, former minister of national security who took office this week as national senator representing the ruling party La Libertad Avanza, also welcomed the champion with a short message on her networks in which she quoted a publication by a deputy congratulating Estudiantes and Verón, adding: “Those who do things well.”
Tensions between Javier Milei’s government and the AFA have existed for more than a year and were sparked by the executive’s intention to promote a model of sports corporations in local football, which was flatly rejected by Argentine football’s governing body and the majority of clubs.
Verón was open to this possibility and deepened his confrontation with the AFA in recent weeks when he expressed his rejection of the AFA’s decision to suddenly create the title of “League Champion” and award it to Rosario Central, which scored the most points in the regular phases of the Apertura and Clausura tournaments, although the first competition was won by Platense and the second is now in the hands of “Pincha”.
His first statements were later accompanied by the decision to express the club’s rejection by turning his back on the traditional route to the champions in the duel against Rosario Central a few days later, a measure that earned Verón a six-month ban from the AFA disciplinary court, which also sanctioned the eleven players who took part in this controversial walk.
This Saturday, due to the suspension, the president of Estudiantes witnessed the game in the stands with the fans and after the consecration he expressed to the Olé newspaper his “joy and joy” for the title, stressing that the players and the coaching staff “found the strength to turn around a moment of something very unfair”.
