Hong Kong police have so far arrested 13 people in connection with the massive fire in a residential complex that left at least 151 people dead.
Chan Tung, head of security at the Hong Kong Police, explained on Monday that his officers “ … “They immediately opened an in-depth investigation on charges of manslaughter,” which led to the arrest of 13 people, including 12 men and 1 woman, aged between 40 and 77 years.
The authorities also indicated that part of the protection networks used in the renovation work of the residential complex did not comply with firefighting regulations. Eric Chan, a government official in Hong Kong, explained that “police collected samples from 20 different points in the Wang Fook complex in the past two days.”
According to him, samples taken from seven of those points, which were collected in four of the seven burnt towers, “They did not meet fire safety standards.” The death toll rose to 151, five more than reported in the previous report.
“The number of confirmed deaths rises to 151 at 4 p.m. (0800 GMT). Another police officer, Cang Shuk-yin, told the press: “We cannot rule out that the number will continue to increase.”
