The new leader of the opposition in the Chamber of Deputies, Cabo Gilberto Silva (PL-PB), announced this Friday (26/12) that he would interrupt the parliamentary recess to press for the dismissal of Minister Alexandre de Moraes, from the Supreme Federal Court (STF).
The parliamentarian has planned a press conference on Monday (29/12), at 2 p.m., in the House. Congress has been on break since December 19, after approving the 2026 budget, and will not resume activities until February.
“We emphasize that we will suspend the parliamentary recess, because it is not possible to remain inert in the face of the institutional absurdity that Brazil is experiencing,” Silva said in a statement.
The leader also called on opposition senators to support the dismissal of the magistrate. The request mentioned by Gilberto was filed on Tuesday (12/23) by Senator Damares Alves (Republicanos-DF).
The parliamentarian accuses the magistrate of “administrative advocacy” after allegedly asking the president of the Central Bank (BC), Gabriel Galípolo, to intercede in favor of Banco Master, owned by Daniel Vorcaro. Moraes claimed, in his notes, that the problem with Galípolo was the Magnitsky Act and that he had not addressed the Master’s situation.
The request for dismissal is addressed to the President of the Senate, Davi Alcolumbre (União-AP). It is up to the Chamber to admit and analyze the requests for dismissal of STF ministers. Moraes has more than 80 such representations in the Senate, none of which are current.
