The federal coordinator of the IU, Antonio Maíllo, defended this Monday the formation of unitary candidates in all territories, in the style of Unidas por Extremadurawhere his pact with Podemos achieved the second best result in percentage of votes and the best in seats for the left to the left of the PSOE. It is for this reason that he called for reaching such an agreement again in Aragon, during the next electoral call, for which he sent a clear warning to Sumar emphasizing that alliances must be built with organizations that “actually exist in the territory”.
In the case of Aragon, which will have regional elections on February 8, Maíllo explained that Discussions are underway to attempt a single electoral list between the alternative left-wing parties and denied the existence of crossed vetoes, as launched on Sunday by the Chunta Aragonesista, pessimistic about the options for constituting a broad front.
In any case, Maíllo explained that his formation is committed to broad coalitions even if they are not unitaryin a clear message to Podemos in the face of the electoral event in a territory, like the Aragonese, in which they have never converged, affirming that in this autonomy electoral fragmentation punishes less.
This was stated during a press conference held at the IU headquarters in Seville to evaluate the result of the elections in Extremadura and welcome the fact that the result of Unidas por Extremadura, the candidacy of his party with Podemos and Alianza Verde, was “spectacular”. According to him, the way forward lies in unitary projects, in “respect” for all organizations, “shared visibility” and attached to the territory.
Maíllo said that Extremadura’s candidacy had increased from four to seven seats in the Extremadura Assembly, four of which would go to IU members and the other three would correspond to Podemos members, including the head of the list Irene de Miguel. “We believe that it is time to structure these spaces as we have always defended and from an integration of everything that really exists in each territory and, on this point, make a political proposal that generates mobilization full of hope,” he stressed.
Therefore, for Maíllo, in Aragon there can be an alternative of the alternative left which is essential to prevent an absolute majority in the PP and achieve an alternative for a progressive government, although he made it clear that what the Extremadura elections revealed is that alliances must be made with organizations anchored in the territory and that IU, as a training present throughout the country, It is proposed as a basic element to raise broad electoral fronts.
Maíllo’s reference appears to be a veiled message addressed to Sumar who, unlike Podemos It has little implementation in the autonomous communitiesas seen in Extremadura, where it was excluded from the registration of the Unidas por Extremadura candidacy and was present in a late position (number 22) in the province of Cáceres with an independent.
