The parents of Raphael Canuto Costa, 21, were unable to follow the funeral of their son, killed by his girlfriend in the early hours of Sunday (28/12), in São Paulo. The young man’s father is PCD (Person with Disabilities) and his mother lives in Juqueirópolis, a city located 630 km from the capital São Paulo, about 10 hours by bus. Due to the distance and limitations of his father, Raphael’s aunt was responsible for all funeral procedures, as authorized by the civil police.
Raphaël had been in a relationship with Geovanna Proque da Silva, aged 21, for about a year. In the early hours of Sunday, he was hosting a barbecue at his home with friends, even though Geovanna was not present. According to witnesses, around 2 a.m., she sent messages motivated by jealousy towards a childhood guest of Raphaël, without any involvement between them. The last recorded message read: “either you solve it or I solve it”, shortly before Geovanna arrived at the residence accompanied by her mother-in-law.

Raphael was killed by his girlfriend who was chasing the motorcycle he was riding with Joyce Correa da Silva, 19, in the southern zone of São Paulo. After a sequence of high-speed maneuvers, Geovanna hit the motorcycle, throwing the victims approximately 30 meters. Raphaël and Joyce died instantly, trapped in the rubble. The motivation given by the police was jealousy, as evidenced by the messages sent by Geovanna moments before the crime, as well as the testimonies that recorded her threats.

The case, registered as double intentional homicide and bodily injury, is still under investigation by the 37th Police District (Campo Limpo). Forensic and toxicological analyzes have been requested and are underway. The police are also seeking to identify possible people involved, witnesses and new images that could shed light on the facts. According to the bulletin, the crime was not a simple accident, as Geovanna’s jealousy and the victims’ inability to defend themselves highlight the premeditated nature of the action.
