The Attorney General’s Office (PGR) expressed support for the defense request of former President Jair Bolsonaro to be hospitalized on the 24th for surgery to remove a bilateral inguinal hernia. The operation should take place the next day.
The procedure was authorized by Minister Alexandre de Moraes last Friday, after an investigation by the Federal Police revealed the need for medical intervention.
The lawyers also request that Bolsonaro be accompanied by former first lady Michelle Bolsonaro and two of her children, senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ) and advisor Carlos Bolsonaro.
“The General Prosecutor’s Office does not oppose the requests to bring the convicted Jair Messias Bolsonaro to the DF Star Hospital on 12/24/2025 to carry out preparatory examinations for a subsequent surgical intervention on 12/25/2025. It also does not oppose the presence of escorts designated by the defense,” wrote the Attorney General of the Republic, Paulo Gonet.
The PF’s expertise concluded that Bolsonaro should be operated on “as soon as possible”, but stressed that the intervention should be carried out “on an elective basis”. Moraes therefore considered that there was no urgency and ordered the lawyers to come up with a date.
Experts concluded that the former president suffered damage to a nerve in his torso resulting from surgery, which causes frequent hiccups. It is necessary to repair this injured area to stop the hiccups.
An inguinal hernia occurs when part of the intestine or abdominal tissue protrudes through a weak spot or opening in the muscular wall of the groin, forming a bulge.
For Moraes, Bolsonaro has “maintained full health treatment conditions at the Regional Superintendence of the Federal Police of the Federal District”, where he is serving the 27 years and three months in prison sentence he received from the STF for attempted coup d’état.
“The defendant is being held in a location absolutely close to the private hospital where he provides emergency health care, even closer than his home – so that there is no harm in the event of a possible need for emergency travel,” the minister wrote.
Moraes also said Bolsonaro had committed “repeated non-compliance with precautionary measures,” which led to him being placed under house arrest in August, and “concrete acts aimed at escaping,” which led to his preventive arrest last month.
One of these acts was the attempt to break his electronic ankle bracelet, admitted by the former president himself.
“The expert report indicates that Jair Messias Bolsonaro attempted to violate the ankle bracelet, causing significant damage to the equipment, with the application of welds, showing the violation of the equipment, with its opening, to achieve his escape,” Moraes highlighted.
