The Pope says he will not ignore human rights violations – DW – 06/12/2025

Today, Saturday (6/12/2025), Pope Leo XIV announced to the new ambassadors to the Holy See that the Vatican will not be indifferent to human rights violations in the world.

He said: “I want to reaffirm that the Holy See will not stand idly by in the face of the dangerous disparities, injustices and violations of fundamental human rights in our international community, which is increasingly divided and conflicted.”

This is the first time that an American Pope has expressed his opinion in such clear terms since his election last May to lead the Catholic Church, after the death of Pope Francis.

Leon said Vatican diplomacy “is constantly directed at the service of humanity, appealing fundamentally to consciences and remaining attentive to the voice of the poor and people living in fragile or marginalized situations.”

By emphasizing inequality, the pope is following in the line of his predecessor Francis: the Argentine was a firm defender of the rights of migrants and other vulnerable populations.
