An oil portrait of George Washington painted by Gilbert Stuart in 1804, which served as the basis for the image on the dollar bill, will be sold at auction in New York on January 23, 2026. Christie’s auction house estimates that the work will fetch between $500,000 and $1 million (up to about 5.5 million reais).
