Portimão is set to host the Portuguese GP again in the 2027 and 2028 seasons, with the announcement expected to take place this Tuesday
The Portuguese Grand Prix is expected to return to the Formula 1 calendar in 2027, according to information published by the SIC Notícias website. The official announcement is scheduled for this Tuesday (16) and will be made by the Minister of Economy, Manuel Castro Almeida. In August, the Portuguese Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, had already raised the possibility of a return of the race.
The race will return to the Autodromo Internacional do Algarve, in Portimão, for a first two-year contract, which hosted the category in 2020 and 2021, during the pandemic. The track was highly appreciated by the drivers and has established itself as one of the most modern circuits in Europe.
The Portuguese GP made its Formula 1 debut in 1958, at the Boavista street circuit in Porto. The following year it was held in Monsanto, Lisbon, and returned to Boavista in 1960. After that, the country was excluded from the category calendar for 24 years.
Between 1984 and 1996, the Estoril circuit hosted the Portuguese GP, providing historic moments, such as Ayrton Senna’s first victory in 1985, Niki Lauda’s title in 1984, won by just half a point over Alain Prost, and later, in 1993, Prost himself would win his fourth track title.
