The speaker of the Popular Parliamentary Group in the Senate, Alicia García, focused her intervention on specific allegations related to the economic management of the current government, emphasizing that the prices of basic foodstuffs have increased by 57% since the administration of Pedro Sánchez took office. In his statements published by the Popular Party and collected by various media outlets, García demanded the return of tax money collected, which he attributed to an increase caused by inflation, while blaming the socialist executive directly for this situation. In this context, the representative of the PP announced that they would request the presence of the Minister of Economy Carlos Body in the Senate to explain the reasons for what they describe as “the most expensive Christmas in history”.
According to the media, García’s criticism focused on the fact that shopping baskets in Spain are currently at an all-time high and attributed this price increase to the Sánchez government. In his words: “There are Christmas products that have doubled in price in just five years.” According to the statements collected, the popular leader described this situation as unacceptable and reiterated that although the state “makes money from inflation by taking in more,” Spanish families are faced with limited purchasing power on a daily basis.
The popular senator also expressed her party’s demand that the government return to citizens “the money collected and over-collected through taxes and inflation.” He also demanded the return of funds he said were lost in corruption cases. For the PP, García said, citizens are “sick of having to pay with their money for the incompetence of a government and the corruption of a government and a party like the PSOE.”
The media explained that the popular speaker linked complaints about the economic situation with accusations of a political nature and declared that the Sánchez-led government represented “corruption, machismo, lies and plunder” for Spanish society. He also added that “between harassment and sexual harassment, Spaniards are seeing their money disappear,” reinforcing the critical tone of the message.
The request for the appearance of the corps of ministers in the Upper House, transmitted by Alicia García herself and, according to the media, circulated, aims for the head of the economic department to “come forward” and “come out of the bunker” to make public statements on the economic sector and, in particular, on the rise in prices on important dates such as Christmas. The minority group in the Senate advocates the need for those responsible for economic policy to take responsibility before the legislature.
In his statement, García emphasized that the high price situation affects not only food but also traditional products of the Christmas season, pointing out that the cost of some of these items has increased significantly. According to the published information, the PP strategy aims to put pressure on the government in terms of price trends and the fiscal situation perceived by citizens.
The PP claims, according to García in his statements reported by the media, that the increase in state revenues is a consequence of inflation, while the needs of families are under greater pressure due to the increased costs of essential goods. The demand for the appearance of the Minister of Economic Affairs is thus framed as an attempt to obtain explanations and commitments on prices and budget management from the executive branch.
