The president calls for demonstrations in Mexico amid political unrest

President Claudia Sheinbaum called for a mass demonstration in the Mexican capital on Saturday (6) to strengthen her leftist government, after a difficult month marked by the murder of a popular mayor, a violent march in the name of Generation Z and the sudden resignation of the Attorney General.

We conclude the year 2025 with the historic celebration of seven years of transformation. Let us defend the people’s achievements together – the president posted on the social network

According to analysts, the president’s problems come not only from his opponents, but from within his own party, Morena. Political analyst Pablo Majlouf explained to Agence France-Presse that the demonstration in the country’s main square is “an attempt to provide internal support, reformulate the discourse and call for unity.”

The deep security crisis that leftist governments are unable to resolve is distorting the administration of the president, who has enjoyed high levels of popularity since taking power in October 2024.

The unrest began last month with the killing of Carlos Manzo, the mayor of Michoacan state, who had campaigned against organized crime. His killing sparked mass demonstrations, and a protest organized last month on behalf of Generation Z became the first violent anti-government rally of his term, leaving more than 100 people injured.

Days later, Prosecutor Alejandro Gertz, who will remain in office until 2028, suddenly resigned. The president herself requested his departure, complaining about increased coordination in the strategy to combat organized crime.

– The most interesting and ironic thing – says Majluf, is that “what weakens Sheinbaum most is not the opposition, which has been eliminated, completely out of the game, but his own political movement.”

According to analysts, this split in the party is linked to one of former President López Obrador’s trusted men. The Minister of the Interior during his government, Adan Augusto Lopez, was linked to a former official arrested in Paraguay for leading a criminal group known as La Paredura.

Although she is very popular, the president is beginning to see levels of disapproval, according to opinion polls. He ended October with an approval rating of 74%, rose to 73% in November, and began December with a 71% approval rating, while his disapproval rating rose from 25% to 28%, according to a Polls MX survey summary.

Claudia Sheinbaum is an “incredibly effective boss” who loves to control and demands a lot of her team. But she also “has difficulty dealing with controversies,” as political writer Hernan Gómez Broera noted.

On Saturday, the government is expected to mobilize the party machine, demonstrate its political strength and rally its supporters.

“One day before we meet again in the Zocalo to celebrate the first seven years of transformation, people are responding with confidence,” Morena’s president, Luisa María Alcalde, posted today in X.

In 2022, López Obrador led a similar march, shortly after tens of thousands of people turned out to protest the reform he promoted to make changes to electoral powers.
