Julián López, current President of the House of Representatives, denounced that the U Party had refused to allow him to be included in the congressional lists for the 2026 general elections.
In his X report, the congressman explained that this measure was a response to a series of reprisals against him led by Dilian Francisca Toro, governor of Valle del Cauca and leader of the political community.

In addition, the parliamentarian from Valle del Cauca explained that one of the facts that could have influenced the refusal of his support was his unanimous support for President Gustavo Petro, as well as the creation of a new political party called La Nueva U, which had generated different criticisms within the political party.
“The U Party broke the law and refused to allow me to return to Congress. This is a retaliation from Dilian Francisca Toro, rallying my support for Gustavo Petro, my defense of the people of Valle del Cauca against their bad government for 10 years and the announcement of my political movement La Nueva U“López wrote on his social networks.

Likewise, the congressman emphasized in his message that the refusal to endorse is a violation of the law and represents an unprecedented case in Colombian politics.
“Never in the history of Colombia has a congressman and chamber president been denied their political rights. This is how the U Party is shaping history, in the worst possible way,” he hinted.
However, the leader was far from being dissuaded and rather expressed his intention to remain on the political stage in the 2027 regional elections.
“Today Dilian closes the doors of the congress for us. But the people of Valle del Cauca will pave our way to the government of Valle. HEAD UP! LET’S GO FORWARD!” he concluded.
López’s complaint also sparked reactions in the country. Interior Minister Armando Benedetti questioned the decision of the directors of this group, stressing that his position does not constitute participation in politics since he is its founder.
“The right and the opposition continue to discriminate and destroy freedoms, democracy and equality from within. How is it possible that the U Party refuses to support Julián López, a native of La U since his youth, representative of the Chamber of the U, President of the Chamber of the U, son of Knight López, who was Senator of the U? (…) It is not an interference in politics, it is just that, before the eyes of all Colombia, a party that I helped to found is becoming anachronistic and retaliatory, violating all the political rights of a citizen.said the portfolio manager.

However, outgoing Bogotá city councilor Daniel Briceño criticized Julián López for his support of Gustavo Petro’s political project.
““Poor” representative. He sold Palmira and his conscience for a notary office for his father. They knelt down to get some coins from Petro and Benedetti. Then the same political class with which they had betrayed the Colombians betrayed him. “This is how the devil pays those who serve him well,” he emphasized.
So far, neither Dilian Francisca Toro nor the U Party directors have commented on the matter.

The internal crisis in the U Party erupted in October 2025 after Julián López, after being elected President of the House of Representatives in July, attempted to form a dissident within the community called “The New U”.
The directives considered that this initiative threatened the unity of the party, and At the end of October 2025, the National Disciplinary and Ethics Control Board of the municipality suspended López for three months.

In addition, they deprived him of the right to vote and vote at party meetings and asked him to stop presiding over the plenary session of the House of Representatives during the period of the sanction.
In protest, López appeared gagged and tied up in the plenary session and accused the party of censorship. He reiterated that the chairmanship of the chamber was granted to him by decision of the plenary session and was not dependent on partisan approval, which is why he remained in office despite the sanction.
