The President of the SP Chamber considers his re-election – 06/12/2025 – Panel

The president of São Paulo City Hall, Ricardo Teixeira (União Brasil), formally received the support of nine parties and consolidated a large advantage in his fight for re-election.

His opponent, Rubinho Nunes (União), chosen by União Brasil, has his candidacy hanging by a thread. His allies believe that he must withdraw it quickly to avoid suffering a crushing defeat on December 15, the date of the election.

On Thursday (4), the PT’s decision to support Teixeira after a tense meeting with Mayor Ricardo Nunes (MDB), coordinator of the re-election of the current president, consolidated its advantage in the conflict. The PT has eight advisors, the largest group in the Chamber.

Subsequently, the MDB, PL, Republicans, PP, PSD, Podemos, PV and Novo published notes of support for Teixeira. Councilor João Jorge (MDB), who is working for the re-election of Teixeira, obtained 43 favorable votes out of 55 possible.

The remaining votes are mainly concentrated in the PSOL, whose advisors also do not admit the possibility of voting for Rubinho, and in União Brasil.

União Brasil’s municipal leadership, led by former House Speaker Milton Leite, is pushing for compliance with an agreement signed last year by party councilors, including Teixeira himself, under which party members would take turns leading the House. Leite is the main guarantor of Rubinho’s candidacy.

“We are not claiming victory early, but we are seeing a consolidated advantage. The support of the mayor was something that brought a lot of coherence to the candidacy of Ricardo Teixeira. And, with all due respect to Rubinho, the companions of the base do not want to vote for those who abandoned ship in difficult times”, says João Jorge.

He refers to Rubinho’s decision to support Pablo Marçal (PRTB) in the middle of last year’s municipal elections. Since then, the advisor has been seen as disgruntled by Nunes, who defined his nomination for president as an affront to União Brasil.
