Jose Antonio Cast
The former MP and ex-UDI activist, from the traditional right, focused his speech on security and migration issues under the concept of Emergency government. The standard bearer thus avoids addressing complex issues for his sector, such as abortion and human rights violations under the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet (1973-1990). She also focused on criticism of President Gabriel Boric, who could not avoid reacting to the attacks.
Economy
The Republican marked the economic debate with two proposals criticized by both the ruling party and the traditional right. One of the most controversial is the $6 billion tax cut in 18 months. Kast did not detail the formula he will use to make the adjustment, although he said he would take steps to reduce spending, such as ending the apitity (officials who obtained their positions through influence) and the regulation of the issuance of medical licenses.
Retirements
In the area of pensions, the candidate declared that he would favor goodbye loana measure that aims to put an end to the loan of 1.5% of people to the State which was defined in the pension reform promoted by the Boric administration. The ultras insisted that their spending reduction proposal would not affect the payment of social benefits, including the guaranteed universal pension (PGU). In his campaign, they spread the expression I love you PGU to emphasize his intention to maintain profit. In tax matters, the candidate promised to eliminate contributions (property tax) on first housing.
public safety
Kast presented the Relentless Plan, a proposal that the candidate said aims to stop the advance of organized crime in the country. “Chile works the other way: criminals are free and honest citizens live locked up. The Relentless Plan is the firm response that millions of Chileans have been waiting for,” he said. Among the initiatives of this plan are the installation of maximum security prisons and the total isolation of drug lords; the end of narcofunerals; tougher sentences for members of criminal gangs; a review of the application of self-defense — ending the “criminalization of victims who defend themselves,” according to the standard-bearer; and create a task force for the recovery of areas occupied by crime. The ultra-conservative is opposed to the death penalty and has said the harshest sentence a person should face is life imprisonment.
Migration
During his 2021 presidential campaign, where he lost in the second round to President Boric, the Republican proposed the creation of a ditch at the Chilean borders to stop the irregular entry of foreigners. One of the most striking ideas is funding some 2,000 flights to deport undocumented migrants back to their countries of origin, at a cost that would reach some $300 million. Kast even said that in his possible government, he would seek to have migrants “collaborate” and pay their own return ticket.
Accommodation
The Republican proposes the implementation of Operating site 3.0which in its content provides for subsidies of up to 1,000 development units (UF), or approximately 39 million pesos ($42,000) to be able to advance in the purchase of land or in the self-construction of houses. The plan also envisages an acceleration of the granting of building permits as well as final acceptance.
Health
The priority of Kast’s health program has been ending waiting lists for patient care in public hospitals. The ultra announced the call Zero planwhich among its measures proposes a massive orientation of patients towards the private sector. The plan would reach a one-time investment of $770 million, which the candidate says can be achieved with a tax adjustment focused on social spending rather than political spending. He will also seek to advance health system reform that changes the work regime of health officials and “ends union privileges” for these groups.
