PSD, the party of city Mayor Eduardo Paes, decided this Thursday afternoon to direct its body in the Rio Legislative Assembly (Alerg) to vote to maintain the preventive detention of the deposed president of the assembly, Rodrigo Basilar. This position was determined at a meeting called by Representative Pedro Paulo, held at the party headquarters in downtown Rio, in the presence of six parliamentarians from the party: Atilla Nunes, Claudio Caedo, Lucinha, Luiz Paulo, Mounir Neto, and Sergio Fernandez.

The decision was taken after an internal assessment of the seriousness of the charges and the institutional impact of the case. In an official memorandum issued after the meeting, the Public Security Directorate stated that it defends “strong and protected institutions against the influence of organized crime,” and stressed that it is up to the plenary session in Al-Alej to decide, responsibly, whether or not to maintain the parliamentarian’s detention.
“The Public Security Directorate-Royal Jordanian advocates the maintenance of preventive detention, ensuring that investigations can continue independently and rigorously – while protecting the right to full defense and contradictory procedures,” the statement read.
Despite the partisan orientation, the Social Democratic Party confirmed that the final vote will be individual. Party leader in Allerg, MP Luiz Paulo, confirmed that the abbreviation only indicates a political path, but does not impose a decision.
-I think it is a political party. On the most important issues that happen in Parliament, you should always guide the vote. Directing a vote does not mean determining a vote. Each parliamentarian, according to his convictions and records, is the one who decides. Since the records have not yet arrived, whatever the vote decides is in my opinion just speculation. He said that the vote I got was taken from the Internet.
Luiz Paulo also said that he has already formed his position, but will be able to formalize the vote only after the formal analysis of the materials to be sent by the court.
-We work as if we were judges. The judge does not cast his vote before receiving the files. If the records reflect what I have already read, then I have already made up my mind,” the commander announced.
With the directives, the PSD joins parties that have already publicly supported the maintenance of Basilar Prison, while Allerg prepares for one of the most tense and decisive votes in the current legislature.
