The used passenger car market in Spain has maintained solid accumulated growth, already touching the two million mark units sold until November (1,999,900 units), which represents an increase of 4.4% year-on-year.
THE … The data, compiled by MSI for employers’ associations GANVAM and Faconauto, confirms that for every new car, 2.1 used cars have been sold so far this year.
However, the month of November recorded a slight decline, with a total of 187,208 units sold, or 2.2% less than the same month of the previous year.
This decline is mainly attributed to the decline in operations of rental companies, which saw a decline of almost 11%. Despite this, the ratio of used vehicles to new vehicles remained stable at 1.9 during the month.
Occasion
Market growth is largely driven by younger vehicles. Used car sales up to five years have accumulated an increase of 6% and already represent almost 26% of total operations, which is equivalent to one in four passenger cars sold belonging to this age group.
At the opposite extreme, models older than a decade, although only growing at 4%, continue to dominate the market, accounting for an overwhelming 57.2% of the total. The average age of used vehicles sold in Spain is 11 years, exceeding 15 years in transactions carried out between individuals. This high aging highlights the difficulties of part of the population in accessing more efficient mobility solutions.
In this context, the electrified used vehicle segment is experiencing double-digit growth. Sales of pure electric vehicles (BEV) jumped 52.6% through November, reaching a volume of 26,313 units, while plug-in hybrids (PHEV) increased 41.4%, with 39,549 units sold in the year to date.
GANVAM and Faconauto defend it the incorporation of second-hand models in incentive programs is crucial to ensure efficient and inclusive mobility.
These organizations maintain that the second-hand market, driven byyoung models and the rapid adoption of electrification, constitutes a fundamental lever for the renewal of the vehicle fleet and greater accessibility.
