The Seven Words, as part of the project to complete the chapel of the crucified, has just unveiled the new altarpiece of the painting of the Virgin of Remedies, located on the side of the aforementioned chapel. The work follows the design made by … Javier Sánchez de los Reyes, on the proposal of Lorenzo Pérez del Campo, and counted on the work of the gilder Daniel Sanchez Vazquez.
This work envisaged the creation of the sculpture, gilding and marbling of the altarpiece which houses the painting of the Virgin of Remedies, as well as eight other additional pieces that were once part of the set. These paintings, since the reopening of the parish of San Vicente in 2001, were placed on the wall of the brotherhood chapel.
Javier Sánchez de los Reyes, based on the proposal of Lorenzo Pérez del Campo —who was based on the altarpiece of San José de Écija, which also contains paintings by Pedro Villegas Marmolejo from 1570— developed this reconstruction project by adapting the idea of the former head of the IAPH Intervention Center to the measurements of the paintings andespecially the dimensions of the side wall of the chapel where it will be located.
The new Seven Words altarpiece
“The criterion followed was to cover and contextualize these paintingsof great artistic and historical value, respecting its original function and composition, using basic architectural lines. A room was created that does not conflict with a brotherhood’s chapel in a historic temple like this.but without concessions of ornamentation or decorative covering that went beyond the reconstruction hypothesis designed by Lorenzo Pérez del Campo and the essential function of this altarpiece, already indicated”, underlines the brotherhood.
The paintings These are works by Pedro Villegas Marmolejo, produced around 1590,and were part of an architectural structure designed by Jerónimo Hernández. In the altarpiece, the Virgin of Remedies occupies the center, accompanied by Saint Jerome and Saints Justa and Rufina, as well as Saint Roque, Saint Sebastian, Saint John the Baptist and Saint Nicholas of Bari, in addition to scenes of the Annunciation of Mary.
