THE Community of Madrid will install stellar tables in viewpoints of the Sierra Oeste with the aim of facilitating dark sky observation and raising awareness of the importance of preserving natural darkness. These interpretive elements incorporate a design that recreates the sky … and enable playback of landscape and astronomy content even in low light conditions.
The contents combine photographs, astronomical illustrations, specific iconography and graphic elements inspired by the darkness of the night. Thus, the Regional Executive invites you to discover and live astrotourism experiences in this area of the region, where the presence of mountains and valleys, the absence of industries and atmospheric stability make this space one of the most suitable for stargazing.
Thus, under the motto “Enjoy the night sky of the Sierra Oeste”. Experience the stars near Madrid”, a series of actions have been initiated aimed at protecting, interpreting and disseminating the quality of the nocturnal landscape, an asset that places this place among the best in the center of the peninsula for astronomical contemplation, according to the Community of Madrid.
The tables also include explanations of nocturnal fauna, the spatial history of the area linked to NASA, sky quality and light pollution, observation recommendations, diagrams of constellations, phases of the moon, as well as cultural and literary references that link night to the identity of the territory. All this provides an educational and sensory experience that allows you to understand the natural, scientific and cultural wealth of the Sierra Oeste after sunset.
Space communications
Since the mid-20th century, Fresnedillas de la Oliva and Robledo de Chavela have played a leading role in space communications, with significant participation in the Apollo missions and deep space research. This heritage transforms the territory into an enclave where history, science and nature come together, they emphasize in the Community.
Added to this trajectory is adequate planning of outdoor lighting, which directly affects the way the environment is perceived, enhancing its natural, cultural and landscape values. “Appropriate design generates sensations, communicates with citizens, strengthens local identity and can stimulate the economy through nature activities,” notes a press release.
Astrotourism in the Community of Madrid is not limited to the Sierra Oeste. Starry nights can be enjoyed in many other places in the region, and one of the most remarkable and unbeatable places is around the Atazar Reservoir, in the Sierra Norte, throughout the four seasons of the year.
