The state government has agreed with the livestock sector to sacrifice about 30,000 healthy pigs on farms close to the outbreak of African swine fever that has been worrying the authorities for weeks.
On Friday afternoon, the government held an emergency meeting with the sector, sources from the Young Farmers and Ranchers Association of Catalonia (JARC) told Europa Press.
It was also learned this afternoon that the Ministry of Agriculture had opened an investigation after finding evidence suggesting that the infection could not have arisen from contaminated food, as was thought, but from experimental facilities where it was working with the virus.
The report comes from the Center for Animal Health Research (CISA-INIA) in Valdolmos in Madrid. Their results concluded that the virus is not compatible with those circulating in the countries of the community, but it is compatible with those used in experimental centers.
