The first chamber of the Federal Court (STF) resumed on Tuesday the last trial of the main actors in the putsch plot. The so-called “core two” is on trial, accused of having “managed” the activities of the organization that tried to keep former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) in power. The analysis was relaunched with the vote of the rapporteur, Minister Alexandre de Moraes.
Six defendants are part of the group: former director general of the Federal Highway Police (PRF) Silvinei Vasques, reserve general Mario Fernandes, former presidential advisors Filipe Martins and Marcelo Câmara and former directors of the Ministry of Justice Marília Alencar and Fernando Oliveira. Everyone denies the accusations.
After Moraes, the other members of the collegiate vote: Cristiano Zanin, Cármen Lúcia and Flávio Dino, president of the first panel.
According to the Attorney General’s Office (PGR), members of the group were responsible for the preparation of the so-called “coup project”, which articulated an action by the PRF aimed at making it difficult for voters in the Northeast region to vote in the 2022 elections and, also, for the preparation of the “Punhal Verde Amarelo” plan, which included the assassination of the authorities.
The six are responsible for the crimes of attempting to abolish the democratic rule of law, coup d’état, involvement in an armed criminal organization, damage to classified property and damage qualified as violence and serious threat to Union property.
Last week, the defenses of the six accused requested their acquittal.
The Attorney General of the Republic, Paulo Gonet, called for the conviction of the six people, described the actions of the group as “serious” and said that the attempts of these people aimed to “create social chaos”.
— The final arguments exhaustively describe the numerous warnings received by the defendants about the risks of the planned mobilizations for self-elimination, showing that they should have acted to prevent the barbarities they experienced. On the contrary, they chose to allow the escalation of social chaos in a last ditch effort and to provoke the military intervention desired by the military organization.
According to Gonet, the accused were responsible for managing the main initiatives of the criminal organization.
— The decisive contribution they made to the characterization of the accused is obvious, using their relevant professional positions and strategic knowledge, — he said.
